Ricardo has served as research and doctoral coordinator of the Law School of University Diego Portales and researcher of the Procedural Reforms and Litigation Program of the same university, as well as Transnational Criminal Justice Program Research Fellow at UCLA and researcher of the Justice Studies Center of the Americas (CEJA).

His main areas of research are procedural law, judicial reforms, and the functioning of the justice system. His most recent work focuses on issues related to access to civil justice, due process, as well as the use of information and communication technologies in justice systems. He uses empirical methods from the Anglo-Saxon tradition of Empirical Legal Studies. He is a member of the Law and Society Association and is currently vice-president of the Chilean Network of Researchers in Procedural Law.
